Chapter 14

Dawn finished loading her groceries in the boot, moving the package containing a new shirt and Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird that she’d bought for John. As an avid reader—apparently encouraged from an early age by Paddy, the old Irishman—it had been difficult to find a title that John hadn’t read, and Dawn was looking forward to seeing his reaction when he opened the present on their wedding anniversary this coming weekend.

As Dawn drove up the main street, a soft, white bunny-rug caught her eye in the Draper’s window and she pulled into the kerb and parked. Perfect for Ann’s new baby. With the blanket carefully wrapped in tissue paper and resting on top of the shirt and book, Dawn glanced in the rear-view mirror and pulled out onto the road facing home.

Oh cripes! I nearly forgot the parcel John asked me to collect.

She did a U-turn and headed to the train station where a box of farm books from George was waiting. According to George, his parcel was too expensive to send via post and would need to be transported by train.

Parking as close as she could to the freight office, Dawn got out and opened the gate leading to the platform. A tall, elderly woman stood outside the building, and Dawn shot her a smile as she passed. Grateful for the young porter’s assistance, she hurried to open the boot door and stood back, allowing the man to place the heavy parcel next to the groceries. Thanking him, she returned to the driver’s seat before glancing again at the woman. Having moved a few steps closer to the gate, the lady seemed to be waiting for someone or something. A familiarity about her disturbed Dawn and she wrinkled her brow as she searched the depths of her memory. The porter had disappeared and with no one in sight, Dawn opened her door and stepped out again.

“Are you waiting for someone? Can I help at all?”

The woman’s face wore a stern, creased expression, as though filled with a dozen worries. Her long, dark coat covered a tall, thin frame, and her cloche hat reminded Dawn of her own grandmother. “I—I do not know.”

“You don’t know … if someone is coming to meet you?”

The woman twisted her gloved hands together and glanced down at the small leather suitcase at her feet. “No. Yes.” She shook her head and Dawn was afraid she was about to cry. “I don’t know what to do.” Her voice was deep and heavily accented—although Dawn couldn’t recognise where the accent was from.

Dawn glanced around. Should she offer to take her to the hospital—or perhaps the police station? She held her hand out. “My name is Dawn Simpson.”

The woman took it gently and nodded. “I am Hilde Hansen.”

Dawn almost choked as she stared into the deep blue eyes and noted the strong bone structure of the woman’s jaw. “Ed’s sister?”

The older woman’s eyes widened and deep creases formed on her forehead. “Ed? I have a brother.
